Don’t Take it Personal

Published by Tamsen Butler at 8:03 am under The Story Edit This

In my book, the main character’s husband is a pretty big jerk.  I didn’t intend on making him so mean, but that’s just how it all came out so I didn’t try to fight it.

When I posted some bits of the novel online that happened to demonstrate what a jerk the husband character is I was surprised by the reaction of some of the male readers.  I had three male friends/ex-boyfriends e-mail me the same timid question:  “Is Thomas based on me?”

You would think my pool of ex’s is riddled with jerks, but it really isn’t.  That’s why I was so surprised when so many of them automatically assumed that the mean character in the book must be a creation fashioned after them.  I assured all of them:  It’s fiction.  You’re not Thomas.  Thomas isn’t you.

For the record, the mean guy in my book is just a fictionalized character.  I consider myself fortunate to have never had anyone like him in my life.

I think I have a new title for my book:  This Isn’t You.
