When It’s Done

Someday not too far from now (okay, maybe a few months or so) I’ll be finished with my book.  Then what?

I’ve heard a few different theories from various sources.  Here is what seems to be the three most common bits of advice:

1.  Get to work finding a literary agent to represent the book.

2.  Self-publish the book.

3.  Put the book away for a few weeks and then read it again in its entirety too see if it’s as good as you think it is.

The first option is awfully appealing, because that’s the eventual goal…to get the book published and widely distributed.  I won’t partake in self-publishing, even if I can never find an agent willing to represent me.  I’m not saying that self-publishing doesn’t have merit in some circles, but the thought of it doesn’t appeal to me.

I’ll be doing the third option: I’m going to put the book away for a little while and then revisit the whole thing.  It’s not like I’m in a big hurry to get it all done anyhow, and I want to make sure that when I am ready to submit the final product that it’s the best it can be.

I’m pretty sure I read about putting a finished book away for a while in Stephen King’s book On Writing.  Hey, if he says to try something, then I’m going to try it.  That man can spin a tale like nobody’s business.
