My Favorite Place to Write

Usually I do my writing at home because I’m responsible for my two Little Ones during the day.  When I do get a chance to take my show on the road, so to speak, I go to the Starbucks down the road and indulge in some coffee and time alone with my story.

Say what you will about Starbucks, but they have good coffee and they don’t have WiFi access.  You have to have T-Mobile or something like that before you can access the Internet there.  Some people might think the lack of Internet access there is a con as opposed to a pro, but for me it’s great.

When I go there I know that it’s just me and the story.  I can’t check my e-mail, I can’t hop on IM, and I can’t do any work that requires some research.  In other words, all I can do is sip coffee and write my story.  This sets the stage for some dazzling productivity.

Every so often I’ll pause to soak in everything around me.  I like to watch the people and try to figure out what their stories are.  It’s incredibly inspiring.

I once wrote a scene that was set in a coffee shop, and I wrote it while sitting at Starbucks.  I think the scene had a certain authenticity to it because I was in the moment.

If you’re writing a story, but haven’t yet found a favorite writing spot, try to find one.  You might be surprised at how inspired you can get when you’re in the right setting.
