Using Real Life

Published by Tamsen Butler at 6:49 am under The Logistics of Writing Edit This

There have been plenty of times when I have taken a real-life encounter and used it in my novel.  A lot of times these instances are things that are infamous within my circle of friends.  I throw these scenarios into my writing for a few reasons:

1.  They’re pretty darn entertaining.

2.  My friends get a kick out of seeing real stuff embedded in a story.

3.  It adds an element of truthfulness to an otherwise fictional story.

Many years ago - when I was in the Air Force - my friend Shanda and I were tasked to drive a golf cart up and down the runway during a public air show.  We took this relatively mundane task and turned it into something that was a lot of fun.   So when the time came for my main character to take a ride in a golf cart in the book, she naturally had a similar situation…sans the jets, of course, but still fun nonetheless.

I’ve seen t-shirts that have this clever phrase written on them: This is so going in my novel.  Maybe I should get one of those shirts.
