Interviewing
One of the writing jobs I have is really quite interesting: I interview women who have been through a divorce and basically have them tell me their story. I listen to the whole story - sometimes which can take several hours of conversation to get through - and then narrow it all down to a condensed version that appears on the site in three parts.
I’m beginning to realize that an interviewer is a lot like a counselor. Some people are just waiting to get their stories out, and once someone finally asks the question it all comes pouring out like crazy. I’m amazed at how open some people can get, especially with a touchy subject like divorce.
Before I picked up this gig I had only conducted interviews with financial services professionals, and although they’re generally a cordial bunch the subject matter can get a bit dry. Ask people about a very pivotal and emotional time in their lives, though, and it’s a whole other ballgame.
