Page Views, or, What’s a Girl Gotta Do to Get Noticed Around Here?

Published by Tamsen Butler at 8:43 am under The Logistics of Writing Edit This

I write for a variety of blogs.  All of them are paying gigs (some more than others), but I know that the more times people look at my blog the better the chances are of me retaining the job and making money for my bosses.  So I do spend some time reading articles about how to increase readership and all that jazz.

According to these instructional articles, I’m supposed to keep things simple, use bullets, and make you want to come back for more the next day.

Wait, what I mean is:

  • Keep it simple!
  • Check back tomorrow for the secret to <insert intriguing mystery here>!

The idea is that people reading stuff on the Web don’t so much read as they do skim.  So I’m supposed to cater to these skimmers and not form full thoughts or paragraphs.

Excuse me…when did we all stop reading?

If you’ve read this entire post then give yourself a pat on the back.  Apparently you’ve just deviated from the average reader, according to the Blog Page View Gurus of Cyberspace.

Hi there. I really should comment more. I have noticed you :) I love your blog. A lot!

You’ve been tagged, so you can see I noticed you. Check out my blog for the details :)

Thanks for the tag! I’ll get to work on the six quirky things about me. The problem will be narrowing them *down* to six.

I read this completely, but maybe it is because I am not the average blog reader :) if I listen to blogging promo tips, I know I will get a headache (I already did when I tried 2 days ago) from visiting too many blogs, since I read entirely their contents, until I can finally relate and comment. Life is not easy eh?

And even the letters to submit comment are very challenging.

I’m glad to see I’m not the only person who actually reads through blogs in their entirety. Perhaps we should start a Thorough Readers Revolution?

I’ve noticed you too and you’re on my list to get added to http://writelyapplied.today.com (a creative revolution, join at your own risk.)

I read to the end…guess we are all freaks. Keep up the good work…look, lose the bullets…I know how to read a paragraph.

Yes! I agree! I really don’t like bullets. I once worked for a company where EVERY perfomance report had to be in bullet format with the whole choppy wording deal. Torture.

You are one of my favorite blogs! Give yourself time…and I think most readers DO read them…and I DETEST bullets! I prefer deep thinking every time.

Thanks! It’s nice to know that there are actually some people reading what I have to say, and it’s even better that some folks agree with the stuff I write.
