Sticking To It

Published by Tamsen Butler at 6:25 pm under The Logistics of Writing Edit This

I may have gone about acquiring a writing career the hard way.  I started out by doing writing for free, then doing some work that was ridiculously low-paying, and then eventually worked my way up to a respectable wage.  How long did it take? I didn’t get to the point to where I could start picking my jobs and turning down others for about a year and a half.

I never would have gotten to this point if I wasn’t willing to work my butt off and do some work that didn’t really interest me in the least.  I still shudder about a job I did once: fifty informative articles about air filters.  Seriously.

It’s not easy, and I know that not everyone is cut out for it.  I’ve gotten writing jobs for a couple of my friends and none of them made it past the first few assignments.  These were talented writers too, but they just didn’t dig the assignments and all the time it took.

Not everyone has to go through all the hard work I went through to get to this point.  I didn’t have a mentor or anything though, so I had to start from the only place I knew where to start: the very beginning.  If you know of a better way, please let me know.

I’m not turning a ton of them away, but I’m sure not writing about air filters anymore.
