Look out; it’s the grammar police!

Published by Tamsen Butler at 5:36 pm under The Logistics of Writing Edit This

I really shouldn’t get so worked up over simple things like bumper stickers, but seeing as people out here in the Midwest seem to have a real affinity toward ridiculously un-p.c. bumper stickers sometimes I just can’t help myself.

It’s fine if you want to put something horribly offensive to women on your car, or if you want to declare what orifice you want to shove my cell phone into, or if you want to decorate your windows with silhouettes of deer with bullseyes on them.  If your car is your medium for demanding social change or making a statement about dirty things you want to do, then go for it.

For goodness’ sake, at least do it properly.

I’ve seen homemade bumper and window stickers that are fraught with spelling and grammar errors.  I’ve also spied ones that appear to be professionally made, but still have errors peppered throughout the clever saying.  It makes me groan.  I want to roll my window down and say, “Excuse me, but while I appreciate that you have such strong views on beer and breasts you should know that your grammar is wrong.”

Yeah, I’m a bit of a nerd.

I’m reminded of the lyrics from Tom Lehrer’s song about Boy Scouts–specifically “Don’t write naughty words on walls if you can’t spell.”

I’ve actually considered talking to church offices to get their message boards changed. I’m astonished at how bad their grammar is there, too.

I’ve also marked up local newspapers, though I’ve only sent one back to the newspaper staff once. I guess I’m a nerd too!

You’re pretty hardcore if you’re marking mistakes in a newspaper, although I’m guessing you found plenty to mark.

I once called the marketing department of the MGM in Vegas because they had an error on their sign. They fixed it.
